As Muslims all over the world are observing fasts the British Foreign Office has issued a warning to those visiting the Dubai to show respect and to obey laws and customs of the Emirate state. The statement says:
"Do not eat, drink or smoke in public view during the daytime (including in your car). This is considered highly disrespectful. It is also against the law and failure to comply could result in arrest. Pregnant, nursing women, and young children are exempt from the provisions, but discretion should be exercised. The majority of eating and drinking establishments will be closed during daylight hours, but you can find some coffee houses with screens that are intended to allow people to eat during the daytime away from public view. Be careful about your dress during Ramadan. Skimpy clothes should not be worn at any time in the UAE, but during Ramadan the standards may be policed even more carefully than usual."
The warning did not come as a surprise as only at the end of last month a British resident in Dubai openly shared her hatred for the holy month to her colleague and even called her "dictator" and a "follower of Osama bin Laden" on Facebook, the popular social networking site. She was charged at the Dubai Court of Misdemeanors for insulting and was fined AED 3,000 - around £497.
